Internships

America’s Packard Museum has exciting and challenging temporary, part-time, unpaid internship positions available. These position work under the supervision of the Collections Manager with additional oversite by other members of the staff. The positions are responsible for assisting in the essential functions of maintaining and improving the facility, collections, exhibits, and educational and outreach activities. Internships are available for students in a variety of majors and focus areas. Interns help in many ways and we will try to balance your interests with our needs. Interns can work on cars; plan exhibits; help with guests, special events, and tours; photography, video, and social media; work in the library; and much more!

  • Hours: Normally 9am-5pm, some evenings or weekends. Some flex-time and remote work may be available.

  • Compensation: unpaid, without benefits

  • Total Hours Worked: Minimum of 10-20 hours per week for at least one semester.

  • Direct Supervisor: Collections Manager

  • Dates: Dependent on internship requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Pursuing or have achieved within the past calendar year a degree or certificate at the community college, college, or university level from a variety of majors and focus areas.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license, have a safe driving record.

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the Museum.

  • Proficient typing and computer skills, including experience in Microsoft Office.

  • Professional respect for museum vehicles and artifacts.

  • Exceptional character, honesty, integrity, and professional work ethic. Personal conduct which compromises any of these qualities is cause for termination of internship.

  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills that include a tactful, gracious, and courteous demeanor.

  • Fluent in the use of the English language and communicate clearly verbally and in written form.

  • The ability to frequently bend, kneel, twist, manipulate small objects with fingers, hold, grasp, work in tight spaces, visually inspect close and far objects, navigate over uneven terrain and long distances, lift and move up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds periodically, and the ability to use mechanical, pneumatic and power tools.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Learn the similarities and differences of preservation, conservation, and restoration for the stewardship of historic objects.

  • Learn how to locate historical research material sources, methods, and techniques necessary to complete and document care to objects.

  • Learn the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to pursue a career in museum stewardship.

  • Learn the historical role of the automobile in society.

  • Learn how the basic goals and methods of running a museum.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in the preservation, conservation, and general maintenance of the museum’s collection

  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness and order within the shop, galleries, and the collections area.

  • Observes safe shop practices and follows safety rules and regulations.

  • Assists in the presentation of exhibits, including setup, upkeep, moves, and takedowns.

  • Interacts with museum guests to assist the museum in enhancing guests’ experience.

  • Maintains timeliness by arriving on-time and prepared for all shifts, meetings, and appointments.

  • Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate boundaries in all interactions with employees, volunteers, guests, and outside contacts.

  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn, follow directions, and take instruction for all assignments.

  • Completes all internship responsibilities as required, both on time and accurately.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions include exposure to a shop, office, and outside environments; outside work is conducted in varying weather conditions; working in confined spaces at times.
