Peter Helck, Walter Gotschke and Carlo Demand had passed by the time Durnell wrote his book but he tells their stories. Each artist had their own style, but few have ever surpassed Gotschke’s thrilling images of Grand Prix racing. “Spa 1953” shows Juan Manuel Fangio driving a replacement Maserati. Fangio had won pole, shattered speed records, switched cars due to engine failure, and was in the lead until he crashed on the last lap.
