1948: Calvin Mayne and Frank Sakada invest $500 each to open a fruit stand at the corner of Far Hills Ave. and Dorothy Lane in Kettering, Ohio. 1953: The first full-scale, brick-and-mortar store opens in Oakwood, Ohio. At 10,000 square feet, it was the largest grocery store in Dayton at the time. Great food, local community, and excellent customer service.

In 1883, 23-year-old Bernard Kroger, the fifth of ten children born to German immigrants, invested his life savings of $372 (equivalent to $12,854 in 2025) to open a grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati. He operated under the motto: "Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself."
