Tom Carnegie was the "Voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway" for sixty consecutive years. He called 61 Indianapolis 500’s, 12 Brickyard 400’s and six United States Grands Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, between May 1946 and May 2006. In 1946 Tom Carnegie was hired by Speedway proprietor Tony Hulman to announce the annual Indy 500 event. Blessed with a booming baritone voice and a strong sense of the dramatic, he became Chief Announcer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway public address system for the following decades. He worked as Sports Director for WIRE radio and then for WRTV in Indianapolis, until 1985. Carnegie also was one of the founders of the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club in 1961, serving as its president from 1977 through 1979. In the early 1970s, he broadcast from such tracks as Ontario, California, and Pocono, Pennsylvania.
